    Fresno State's 30-year streak of NCAA Tournament bids is over.  The Bulldogs didn't see their name in the field for the first time since NCAA tourney play began in 1982. The Bulldogs, who went 36-23 this season, picked up six victories over teams that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament field, including victories over No. 1 regional seed UCLA, Hawai'i, BYU and San Diego State.  Fresno State's total

    When NCAA Tournament bids are announced Sunday evening at 7 p.m. Pacific time on ESPNU, it's quite possible that many eyes around the country will be focused on the Western Athletic Conference. With BYU already knowing it's in the 64-team tournament field by virtue of its championship game win today over Fresno State, two questions remain: Will Hawai'i be selected as an NCAA regional host?

    Brigham Young used a 5-run fifth inning to break open a tight game and beat Margie Wright's Fresno State Bulldogs 8-3 to win the Western Athletic Conference tournament title in Las Cruces Saturday. Fresno State, playing its fifth game in the tourney and its fourth consecutive elimination game, ran into trouble in that inning against a much fresher group of Cougars.  BYU entered Saturday

  • Softball Infielder Drill – Quick Hands

    One of our everyday drills for infielders includes a drill we call “Quick Hands.” Players must concentrate, get the balls out of their gloves as quickly as possible, have good hand speed and quick release, and good footwork. Quick Hands This drill is done with a group of four or five. One person (the thrower) stands about 15′ from & facing the other (three or four) players in her group.     I like to run the Box Drill but with my own twist—it’s kind of like the 4 corner drill set-up wise but rules of the game are slightly different. You can do this anywhere. The 4 Corner Box Drill Set up 4 players roughly 20′ apart from each other in shape of a square (they are the corners). Going clockwise underhand toss to next player where she traps the ball between throwing hand and back of mitt.     Here are a couple of drills that we like to do in practice.  The first one is a timed drill that works on throwing and sprinting to the base.  We do the second drill at the end of practice for some fun time for the players. Timed Throwing Drill We use a stop watch for this one. We put 3 players on each base, first, second, third and home. The player at home starts with the ball.     A drill that I like to use is one that works great for infielders and outfielders alike. Softball Fielding Drill Break into two groups: the first player in line in group A takes two steps out then turns to face the next player in line. She then simulates that it is a hit to her back hand side concentrating on the pivot and then a slow jog glove hand up and extended to catch the ball. While in a slow jog the player that is next in line tosses the ball to her teammates back hand side (a throw that is catch-able but can also challenge his team mate).     There is a time to have some fun and still learn or polish some skills. I like to use the end of practice for a fun game that can create some team bonding while still focusing on softball fundamentals. Barney Bop Throwing Drill One of the best games I have used is called “Barney Bop”. The tools needed are a sturdy chair, a large stuffed toy (I use Barney, hence the name) and preferably a backstop or net to place behind the target.
