Softball Pitching Drill for Better Balance
Softball9 May 2012 | 4:06 pmWeight Back and Balanced Pitching Drill by Hal Skinner As a pitcher, it's important to understand how important it is to start your pitch off in a balanced pitching stance. For the smoothest motions, you must also maintain that same balance through the entire course of your motions when you pitch. Here is a pitching drill that gives you a feeling of balance during your pitching motions, the feeling of a slight lean forward at the start and of having the weight back at the end of the motions. How to do the drill Part One Stand on the rubber and bend your stride knee to 90 degrees, like a… -

A Successful Pitching Philosophy
5 Apr 2012 | 9:23 amHere's a philosophy on being a successful pitcher as shared by legendary pitcher and instructor Coach Hal Skinner in his book Sneaky Softball Pitching. The best and most widely respected pitchers are those who pitch the smartest games. They don’t have to throw the quickest fastball, or have a large number of different pitches to choose from, or even have great ball movement on those pitches. The best pitchers are the unpredictable pitchers. The unpredictable pitchers are the smart pitchers! Years ago, my goal was to become a smart pitcher; to outsmart the batters, the teams I faced. -

While there are various sports psychology tips and tricks for improving your mental game, here are 3 simple tips you can start using today to help you bounce back from your softball mistakes: Accept: Accept that you made a mistake… -
Softball Tips: Simple Trick to Help You Perform Like a Champion
22 Mar 2012 | 4:23 amGuest Post by Mike Tully My 4-year-old grand-daughter put her arms around me, kissed me goodnight and then said, “Your hair smells like beach house.” One sniff of my newly washed hair took her mind to memories of our family vacation. Her train of thought is one that can take you to greatness in sports, with a technique called anchoring. It’s based on a principle so simple that even a 4-year-old noticed it. As mammals, we are wired to associate physical sensations with emotions. For instance, you probably have a song that reminds you of some person, place or thing. Tasting a certain food…

Bulldogs' 30-year streak ends; Wahine to Tucson
13 May 2012 | 10:14 pmFresno State's 30-year streak of NCAA Tournament bids is over. The Bulldogs didn't see their name in the field for the first time since NCAA tourney play began in 1982. The Bulldogs, who went 36-23 this season, picked up six victories over teams that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament field, including victories over No. 1 regional seed UCLA, Hawai'i, BYU and San Diego State. Fresno State's total -
WAC hopes for 3 NCAA Tournament bids Sunday
12 May 2012 | 7:38 pmWhen NCAA Tournament bids are announced Sunday evening at 7 p.m. Pacific time on ESPNU, it's quite possible that many eyes around the country will be focused on the Western Athletic Conference. With BYU already knowing it's in the 64-team tournament field by virtue of its championship game win today over Fresno State, two questions remain: Will Hawai'i be selected as an NCAA regional host? -

Softball Infielder Drill – Quick Hands
15 May 2012 | 2:57 pmOne of our everyday drills for infielders includes a drill we call “Quick Hands.” Players must concentrate, get the balls out of their gloves as quickly as possible, have good hand speed and quick release, and good footwork. Quick Hands This drill is done with a group of four or five. One person (the thrower) stands about 15′ from & facing the other (three or four) players in her group. The thrower begins with two softballs. She will toss a grounder or a line drive to one fielder, who will field the tossed ball ant make a good, quick throw back to the tosser. As the ball… -
The 4 Corner Box Drill
11 May 2012 | 2:28 pmI like to run the Box Drill but with my own twist—it’s kind of like the 4 corner drill set-up wise but rules of the game are slightly different. You can do this anywhere. The 4 Corner Box Drill Set up 4 players roughly 20′ apart from each other in shape of a square (they are the corners). Going clockwise underhand toss to next player where she traps the ball between throwing hand and back of mitt. This continues for YOUR determined amount of time, then they reverse direction working on the back hand “flip” and still trapping ball in same manner. Here is where it gets cool (twisted)… -
Youth Softball Practice Drills – Timed Throwing Drills and End of Practice FUN!
8 May 2012 | 3:40 pmHere are a couple of drills that we like to do in practice. The first one is a timed drill that works on throwing and sprinting to the base. We do the second drill at the end of practice for some fun time for the players. Timed Throwing Drill We use a stop watch for this one. We put 3 players on each base, first, second, third and home. The player at home starts with the ball. She throws the ball to first and than sprints to first. The first baseman catches the ball and throws the ball to second and sprints to second. The second baseman throws to ball to third and sprints to third. The… -
Softball Fielding Drill – Infield and Outfield Drill
4 May 2012 | 5:19 pmA drill that I like to use is one that works great for infielders and outfielders alike. Softball Fielding Drill Break into two groups: the first player in line in group A takes two steps out then turns to face the next player in line. She then simulates that it is a hit to her back hand side concentrating on the pivot and then a slow jog glove hand up and extended to catch the ball. While in a slow jog the player that is next in line tosses the ball to her teammates back hand side (a throw that is catch-able but can also challenge his team mate). The first person then catches the ball on the… -
Barney Bop Softball Throwing Drill
1 May 2012 | 4:01 pmThere is a time to have some fun and still learn or polish some skills. I like to use the end of practice for a fun game that can create some team bonding while still focusing on softball fundamentals. Barney Bop Throwing Drill One of the best games I have used is called “Barney Bop”. The tools needed are a sturdy chair, a large stuffed toy (I use Barney, hence the name) and preferably a backstop or net to place behind the target. Start by placing “Barney” in the chair and if needed, prop him up to get him about 3-4 feet off the ground and place the chair with Barney…
